Maptrails is a modern map browser tailored for hikers, hunters, orienteers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to enhance their time in nature. The app boasts comprehensive support across Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac.

The free version includes a diverse selection of built-in maps featuring topographic, nautical, and aerial styles. Users can conveniently save locations as markers that seamlessly sync across their devices via iCloud. With intuitive tools for distance measurement, path drawing, and street-level imagery through Look Around, the app ensures a holistic map experience.

Upgrading to Maptrails Pro via a one-time purchase unlocks a professional-grade feature suite. Users gain the ability to personalize maps with additional data layers from standard APIs, as well as integrate GPX, GeoJSON, or Shapefile information. Furthermore, the Pro version facilitates direct note-taking on maps using touch or a pencil.

Planning hiking expeditions is simplified with the ability to download map tiles for offline usage, access real-time weather forecasts, and save tracks as GPX files. During hikes, users can record routes as GPX tracks or workouts in the Health app and analyze speed and altitude data visually.

For hunters, integration with Oma Riista allows seamless importing of hunting areas via area codes. Additionally, users can share their GPS location securely with fellow Maptrails users within private groups.

A novel feature within the app is the capability to create a personal dog tracker by pairing it with the separate Beacon app on another device. This facilitates real-time mapping of the dog’s position within Maptrails.
